OUR RESEARCH
The main focus of the research in our lab is plant-pathogen interactions. Plant pathogens challenge our efforts to maximize crop production. A limited understanding of the pathogenesis and defense mechanisms involved in plant-pathogen interactions often obstruct those efforts. I chose to focus on the plant's defense against the fungal plant-pathogen Botrytis cinerea. One such defense mechanism involves the enormous variety of phytochemicals produced by plants to cope with pathogens and environmental changes. We are especially interested in characterizing the impact of secondary metabolites on fungal phytopathogens. In addition, we are studying the genes involved in glucosinolate control and in other plant defense responses. Other layer of plant defense against B. cinerea that I am exploring is the plant's induced resistance system by beneficial microorganisms such as Pseudozyma aphidis. Our research is expected to unveil the mechanism's P. aphidis uses to control B. cinerea and other pathogens. Our knowledge on the regulation of plant defense pathways may contribute in the long term to the development of sophisticated plant-protection strategies.
